    THE PUZZLE?

"Ever since I was a child, I played with anything having to do with building, disassembling, reassembling, and I let my instinct and imagination take me away. Games like 'Lego' and 'Puzzle' were my main activity; I would assemble sets and then have fun taking them apart and recreating them, trying to bring new images to life. I would start experimenting by putting pieces of different boxes together. My parents' house was full: the walls were covered with pictures of jigsaw puzzles that I did quite frequently. It would happen, however, while playing, that I would lose even one piece and end up with a 'hole' in the picture. It was the thing I hated the most, as my efforts would be in vain and I would end up wasting hours mulling over the missing piece. Then I started to grow up and my creative doing was confronted with painting."

The jigsaw puzzle, an almost indispensable element in the artist's pictorial production, is a legacy he has carried with him since his early adolescence: putting the pieces together with painting is the artist's aesthetic quest; it designates the process through which our approach to reality starts from a detailed vision (single piece) and slowly arrives at composing, by overview, the entire image.

His latest production tends to broaden the concept of the puzzle (tessera): the images that inhabit the canvas break down and occupy the support, which thus becomes the table on which the puzzle box is turned upside down; an infinite space within which to orbit the representations, a "game" for the spectator who must reason by an overall vision since it is the mind that suggests composing the decomposed image.
